WASHINGTON INVASIVE SPECIES COUNCIL MEETING The next meeting of the Washington Invasive Species Council will be Thursday, September 9, 2010 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 p.m. at the Natural Resource Building, Room 172, 1111 Washington Street SE, Olympia, WA 98501.

Pruning Workshop in Spanish This class and hands-on field day is designed for Spanish-speaking landscape professionals. George Ortiz, CLT, of Signature Landscape Services will give the morning lecture. In the afternoon, everyone will assemble at a landscape somewhere in Greater Seattle for hands-on practice on common landscape trees and shrubs. Participants will work in small groups with experienced teachers--at a 3:1 student:teacher ratio. Students will earn a PlantAmnesty Certificate of Completion and can also earn ISA, CLT, and CPH credits.
Cost: $30. Cost includes a two-hour pruning DVD in Spanish and handouts

Restoration landscaping, rain gardens, and food gardens are more widespread these days. Customers and the public are asking for pesticide-free maintenance of trees, yards, and grounds. Research on natural turf and athletic field management has advanced. Come to these workshops to gain practical knowledge from industry experts and peers and meet the challenge of maintaining sustainable landscapes.
Topics for the November 3rd workshop at South Seattle Community College include: maintaining restored sites, rain gardens, and green infrastructure; pest and disease control for edible plants; planning ahead for pest and disease problems; how to fix bad tree root systems; how to recognize hazard trees; and a 3-hour session in Spanish on year-round weed control. Attendees have a choice of afternoon sessions on chemical-free tree care, designing for edibles, and restoration landscaping strategies.

The half-day November 15th workshop at the Seattle University campus focuses on managing turf using organic and sustainable methods. Researchers and landscape practitioners will address methods for transitioning lawns from chemical dependence to sustainable maintenance, and will discuss how Seattle University has managed its turf without pesticides for more than a decade. Find out about seed selection, fertilization, irrigation, compost tea and other organic amendments, and installation of a new athletic field. The workshop includes a tour of the Seattle University campus.
